MDPI: Assessing Math Learning
Many students in today's complex world encounter problems learning the mathematical concepts and procedures appropriate to their cognitive potential and are struggling in the classroom. Currently, there are limited tools available for identifying the underlying issues that are impeding the students progress. While most math assessment instruments may assess specific skills, they reveal little information as to the nature and quality of the students poor performance, or the reasons why a student is experiencing difficulty.
What is needed is a comprehensive diagnostic instrument that can provide a thorough understanding of the learning issues underlying a students poor performance in mathematics. The Mathematics Diagnostic/Prescriptive Inventory (MDPI), an individualized evaluation tool, provides an easy, efficient, yet comprehensive, instrument that assesses a student's skills as well as the source of the student's challenges. The output is a definition of the student's Mathematics Learning Profile, the key to a successful intervention.
